Slouching towards deponency: A family of mismatches in the Bantu verb stem

چکیده
1. INTRODUCTION. Most Bantu languages have a set of highly productive verbal deriva-tional suffixes which alter the argument structure and semantics of basic verb roots. 1 One example of such a suffix is the Causative, which gives a verb stem causative semantics and allows it to take an extra causer argument. A prototypical instance of the use of the Causative, drawn from Chichewa (Baker 1988:10), is given in 1.

The natural history of verb-stem reduplication in Bantu
In this study I present a comparative and historical analysis of ‘‘frequentative’’ Bantu verb-stem reduplication, many of whose variants have been described for a number of Eastern and Southern Bantu languages. While some languages have full-stem compounding, where the stem consists of the verb root plus any and all suffixes, others restrict the reduplicant to two syllables. Two questions are a...
متن کاملLexical Semantics and Selection of TAM in Bantu Languages: A Case of Semantic Classification of Kiswahili Verbs
The existing literature on Bantu verbal semantics demonstrated that inherent semantic content of verbs pairs directly with the selection of tense, aspect and modality formatives in Bantu languages like Chasu, Lucazi, Lusamia, and Shiyeyi. Thus, the gist of this paper is the articulation of semantic classification of verbs in Kiswahili based on the selection of TAM types. This is because the sem...
متن کاملNew Evidence for a Phonological Stem Domain in Kinande
The verb in Bantu is a highly complex structure, in which long sequences of morphemes are not at all uncommon. However, as has long been recognized, these morphemes do not all belong to a single monolithic domain. Instead, they divide into two main groups: those that lie within the verb stem – i.e. the root, the final vowel, and any intervening extension suffixes – and those that lie outside of...
متن کامل13 Morphosyntactic Correspondence in Bantu Reduplication
and others, the primary goal in the study of partial reduplication has been to construct a theory that insightfully captures the full range of considerations that speakers may invoke in determining how a reduplicant will relate to its base. Given that both phonology and morphology are potentially involved, this has meant two things. First, there has been an attempt to characterize the reduplica...
متن کاملRealisations of a single high tone in Northern Sotho
This article reports on a production study that investigates the realisation of a single high tone in the verbal constituent in Northern Sotho, a Bantu language spoken in South Africa. The parameters of variation investigated are based on existing descriptive and theoretical literature and relate to numbers of syllables in the verb stem, morphosyntactic constituency and verb-internal morphologi...
